Editor's Review:

DesktopLawyer offers affordable documents through an easy-to-use interface. What's more you're able to create a draft of your document and make sure it's suitable before you pay for it. This makes it a low risk option for anyone who's not completely sure what their legal document ought to look like.   The site specialises in family and business law.

You can choose from a fairly substantial range of documents, which cover areas such as building work, conveyancing, divorce, motoring landlords, personal finance, power of attorney, wills, business start ups, Ecommerce, money laundering and more. Each of these sections divides into subsections which offer a number of documents that might be of use to you. This includes a strong selection of letters, most of which are just £3.99.

Documents can cost considerably more. We spotted a number from around £15, whilst others were closer to £100. In comparison to hiring a solicitor this is of course very cheap, but it's approximately in line with other legal document websites. Notably, you won't have the assistance of a solicitor unless you request it. The site does offer an evaluation of your documents by a solicitor, but this isn't free and you are likely going to be encouraged to hire their services to produce your document. Prices for this service are not provided so if you would like legal assistance then please make a direct inquiry with the site's team. Such services are provided by myLawyer.co.uk.

Navigating the site is generally effortless, although the help sections could use a search feature as you will often find yourself simply browsing through lengthy lists of questions and potential answers. Signing up is also pretty simple, and we were glad to see that you can create a full draft of a document before deciding to pay for it. Clever punters will use this to their advantage and realise that they will be able to learn how to write the documents without necessarily paying for the service. However, you may not have the benefit of the specially designed templates and appropriate phrasing, which the site provides.

The site tries to sell itself by suggesting that there are several key benefits to its service. Namely, it says that its fixed prices offer no hidden costs, that you don't even need to register to get started on a document, that you can access and edit a document at any time and that you may receive a full refund if you are dissatisfied. This is all well and good but it hardly sets them apart from another legal documents website.

DesktopLawyer is a comprehensive site but it fails to offer any services that make it stand out from its competitors. If you want to get a good idea about how your document might look and sound, it's worth trying out the system to view a draft. Its letters also offer good value for money, and generally speaking it's on par with other sites in terms of document costs. However, there are better sites out there which offer superior services and a wider range of options.
